Prayagraj, January 29, 2025: A tragic stampede-like situation occurred today at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj during the Mauni Amavasya celebrations. The incident took place near Sangam Nose after a barrier broke, leading to panic among devotees.

Casualties and Response
According to initial reports, at least 38 people have lost their lives, and many others have been injured. Rescue operations are underway, and injured individuals are receiving treatment. Officials have confirmed that no one is in critical condition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have personally spoken to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, assuring full support from the central government. PM Modi has called for immediate relief measures and is constantly monitoring the situation.

Akhada Parishad Cancels Bathing Rituals
In response to the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has announced the cancellation of Mauni Amavasya’s bathing rituals. Mahant Ravindra Puri has urged devotees to perform their holy dip in the Ganga at alternate locations and return home safely.
Massive Crowd at Mahakumbh 2025
The Uttar Pradesh government had anticipated a gathering of 10 crore people at the Mela today, one of the largest congregations of devotees. Despite security arrangements, the overwhelming crowd led to severe congestion at entry points, ultimately triggering the unfortunate incident.
Government’s Appeal
Authorities have requested devotees to avoid the main bathing site at Triveni Sangam and instead use nearby riverbanks to perform their rituals. The UP government has also deployed additional rescue teams, medical staff, and law enforcement personnel to manage the situation.
